Business news is a soap opera

Line illustration: two old televisions facing each other with overlapping speech bubbles between them; one speech bubble is the terracotta accent.

Business news is gossip.

Anybody who follows the fight between Elon and OpenAI, who has an opinion on it, who talks about it at dinner — that person can never talk shit about the Kardashians again. Ever. It's the same thing.

Same with sports. Same with the news in general. It's all the same gossip machine, just wearing a different suit.

What we call it

Staying informed

  • Analysis
  • Market news
  • Following the industry
The respectable version of watching people we don't know.
What it is

A soap opera

  • Rich people, feuding, on camera
  • A recap the next morning
  • A ticker running underneath it
Same show. It just moves stock prices.

The only difference — one of these gossip shows can move your 401k

It's all rich people stories. The names change — Elon, Tim Apple, Trump, whoever's suing whoever this week — but the format is identical to reality TV. A feud, a villain, a comeback arc, a leaked text message everyone pretends to be shocked by.

The only real difference is business gossip has a side effect: it moves stock prices. Otherwise it's the same addiction.

And we're all addicted to it. Including me. I'll read the Elon thread same as anyone.

The choice you should make is which ones. Pick the stories that bring value into your life and let the rest run in the background.

Our biggest enemy is distractions, and it's the only thing keeping us from getting ahead in life.

Same gossip. Different blazer.
