Soon: social interactive ads

This started as a tweet →

I was watching a movie on Prime. A character is using a Swiffer — and an ad shows up at the bottom of the screen with a Buy Now button. Not before the movie. Not over it. Inside the scene.

Meanwhile, YouTube now lets creators tag Amazon products in their videos, like an affiliate. Put the two together and you can see exactly where this goes.

Today

Ads interrupt

  • Pre-roll before the video
  • Banner over the content
  • Discount code buried in the caption
The ad and the content fight for the same seconds.
Tomorrow

The scene is the shelf

  • The movie tags its own props
  • The reel tags the outfit
  • Buy without leaving the story
The ad and the content are the same thing.

The shift — from interrupting the story to selling inside it

No interruption — the checkout lives inside the content

This flips product placement from a brand play into a performance channel. For decades brands paid to put a car in the movie and hoped. Now the car in the movie has a button, and the button has attribution.

Social is next. Every reel becomes a storefront, every creator's closet becomes a catalog, and the affiliate link moves from the bio into the frame itself. The platforms want it because they finally capture the purchase, not just the impression.

If you sell anything: start thinking about how your product looks in use, inside someone else's content — because that's the ad unit that's coming.

The best ad won't look like an ad. It'll look like the movie.
